Civil Legal Aid
Community Legal Services can help qualifying Arizonans with some types of civil cases.
“Most Americans don’t realize that you can have your home taken away, your children taken away and you can be a victim of domestic violence but you have no constitutional right to a lawyer to protect you.”
— James J. Sandman, President of the Legal Services Corporation, 2013
Civil legal aid helps ensure fairness for all in the justice system, regardless of how much money you have. It provides access to legal help for people to protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families. Civil legal aid connects Americans with a range of services including legal assistance and representation, self-help centers and other court-based services, free legal clinics and pro-bono assistance, and access to web-based information and form that help guide them through complicated legal proceedings. In doing so, civil legal aid helps Americans protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families.
Civil legal aid provides:
- Easy-to-understand forms, including online forms, that people can use in civil legal proceedings.
- Legal assistance, including legal self-help centers, so people can know their rights.
- Legal representation to those who cannot afford it — because justice should not depend on how much money you have.
Access to Justice for All
CLS works to make our services accessible to all. In addition to making our services available to people with disabilities, we also provide translators for all languages.
Under Titles VI and VVII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI and VII) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, CLS prohibits discrimination in applications, programs, services, activities or employment based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, and disability. CLS will make reasonable accommodations to allow a person with a disability to take part in a program, service, or activity.
Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request. For example, this means that if requested, CLS will provide sign language interpreters for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, a wheelchair accessible location, or enlarged print materials. It also means CLS will take any other reasonable action that allows you to take part in and understand a program or activity, including making reasonable changes to an activity.
If you believe you will not be able to receive services because of your disability, please let us know of your disability need in advance if at all possible.
